6 The Lord said to Joshua, ‘Do not be afraid of them, because by this time tomorrow I will hand all of them, slain, over to Israel. You are to hamstring their horses and burn their chariots.’

David captured a thousand of his chariots, seven thousand charioteers and twenty thousand foot soldiers. He hamstrung all but a hundred of the chariot horses.


‘Don’t be afraid,’ the prophet answered. ‘Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’


Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the gorge in the Desert of Jeruel.


He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’


The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.


He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.


The righteous lead blameless lives; blessed are their children after them.


You said, “No, we will flee on horses.” Therefore you will flee! You said, “We will ride off on swift horses.” Therefore your pursuers will be swift!


Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots and in the great strength of their horsemen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel, or seek help from the Lord.


‘ “Then those who live in the towns of Israel will go out and use the weapons for fuel and burn them up – the small and large shields, the bows and arrows, the war clubs and spears. For seven years they will use them for fuel.

You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God gives over to you. Do not look on them with pity and do not serve their gods, for that will be a snare to you.


The Lord said to Joshua, ‘Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you.’


All these kings joined forces and made camp together at the Waters of Merom to fight against Israel.


So Joshua and his whole army came against them suddenly at the Waters of Merom and attacked them,


Joshua did to them as the Lord had directed: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.


Joshua told the people, ‘Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.’

They told the messengers who had come, ‘Say to the men of Jabesh Gilead, “By the time the sun is hot tomorrow, you will be rescued.” ’ When the messengers went and reported this to the men of Jabesh, they were elated.
