David said to Abishai, ‘Now Sheba son of Bikri will do us more harm than Absalom did. Take your master’s men and pursue him, or he will find fortified cities and escape from us.’


The king of Israel advanced and overpowered the horses and chariots and inflicted heavy losses on the Arameans.


Abijah and his troops inflicted heavy losses on them, so that there were five hundred thousand casualties among Israel’s able men.


‘Announce in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem and say: “Sound the trumpet throughout the land!” Cry aloud and say: “Gather together! Let us flee to the fortified cities!”


Why are we sitting here? Gather together! Let us flee to the fortified cities and perish there! For the Lord our God has doomed us to perish and given us poisoned water to drink, because we have sinned against him.


However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes.


The Lord threw them into confusion before Israel, so Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely at Gibeon. Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon and cut them down all the way to Azekah and Makkedah.


But don’t stop; pursue your enemies! Attack them from the rear and don’t let them reach their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.’


The whole army then returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no-one uttered a word against the Israelites.


Joshua took all these royal cities and their kings and put them to the sword. He totally destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded.


and the Lord gave them into the hand of Israel. They defeated them and pursued them all the way to Greater Sidon, to Misrephoth Maim, and to the Valley of Mizpah on the east, until no survivors were left.


When Israel had finished killing all the men of Ai in the fields and in the wilderness where they had chased them, and when every one of them had been put to the sword, all the Israelites returned to Ai and killed those who were in it.
