The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.’


You made their children as numerous as the stars in the sky, and you brought them into the land that you told their parents to enter and possess.


Then the Lord said to Satan, ‘Have you considered my servant Job? There is no-one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.’


‘Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations.


But this is not true of my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my house.


But commission Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he will lead this people across and will cause them to inherit the land that you will see.’


Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, ‘Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance.


And Moses the servant of the Lord died there in Moab, as the Lord had said.


After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant:


‘Go through the camp and tell the people, “Get your provisions ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.” ’
