The messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, ‘Look, the other prophets without exception are predicting success for the king. Let your word agree with theirs, and speak favourably.’


‘Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long;


‘If you are the Son of God,’ he said, ‘throw yourself down. For it is written: ‘ “He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”’


‘When you fast, do not look sombre as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.


‘And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.


A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.


‘I have spoken openly to the world,’ Jesus replied. ‘I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.


Jesus’ brothers said to him, ‘Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do.


For even his own brothers did not believe in him.
