Therefore this is what the Lord says about the prophets who are prophesying in my name: I did not send them, yet they are saying, “No sword or famine will touch this land.” Those same prophets will perish by sword and famine.


I did not send these prophets, yet they have run with their message; I did not speak to them, yet they have prophesied.


Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams,’ declares the Lord. ‘They tell them and lead my people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not send or appoint them. They do not benefit these people in the least,’ declares the Lord.


They rush upon the city; they run along the wall. They climb into the houses; like thieves they enter through the windows.


‘Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.


Therefore Jesus said again, ‘Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.


Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, no-one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.’


And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’


For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.


They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach – and that for the sake of dishonest gain.


And no-one takes this honour on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.


Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care,


But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them – bringing swift destruction on themselves.


In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.


Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
