Then the man said, ‘Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.’


Whoever slanders their neighbour in secret, I will put to silence; whoever has haughty eyes and a proud heart, I will not tolerate.


whose tongue utters no slander, who does no wrong to a neighbour, and casts no slur on others;


Whoever conceals hatred with lying lips and spreads slander is a fool.


Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow is one who gives false testimony against a neighbour.


For they cannot rest until they do evil; they are robbed of sleep till they make someone stumble.


They eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.


There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him:


a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.


rebellion and treachery against the Lord, turning our backs on our God, inciting revolt and oppression, uttering lies our hearts have conceived.


Those who guide this people mislead them, and those who are guided are led astray.


Your relatives, members of your own family – even they have betrayed you; they have raised a loud cry against you. Do not trust them, though they speak well of you.


They are all hardened rebels, going about to slander. They are bronze and iron; they all act corruptly.


Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaks deceitfully. With their mouths they all speak cordially to their neighbours, but in their hearts they set traps for them.


In you are slanderers who are bent on shedding blood; in you are those who eat at the mountain shrines and commit lewd acts.


‘ “Do not go about spreading slander among your people. ‘ “Do not do anything that endangers your neighbour’s life. I am the Lord.


Do we not all have one Father? Did not one God create us? Why do we profane the covenant of our ancestors by being unfaithful to one another?


Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues.


‘Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.


You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death.


and that in this matter no-one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before.
