As often as it comes it will carry you away; morning after morning, by day and by night, it will sweep through.’ The understanding of this message will bring sheer terror.


‘Listen to the terms of this covenant and tell them to the people of Judah and to those who live in Jerusalem.


But when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon invaded this land, we said, “Come, we must go to Jerusalem to escape the Babylonian and Aramean armies.” So we have remained in Jerusalem.’


‘Announce this to the descendants of Jacob and proclaim it in Judah:


‘Flee for safety, people of Benjamin! Flee from Jerusalem! Sound the trumpet in Tekoa! Raise the signal over Beth Hakkerem! For disaster looms out of the north, even terrible destruction.


Why are we sitting here? Gather together! Let us flee to the fortified cities and perish there! For the Lord our God has doomed us to perish and given us poisoned water to drink, because we have sinned against him.


Who is wise enough to understand this? Who has been instructed by the Lord and can explain it? Why has the land been ruined and laid waste like a desert that no-one can cross?


‘ “They have blown the trumpet, they have made all things ready, but no-one will go into battle, for my wrath is on the whole crowd.


‘Put the trumpet to your lips! An eagle is over the house of the Lord because the people have broken my covenant and rebelled against my law.


Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy hill. Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming. It is close at hand –


When a trumpet sounds in a city, do not the people tremble? When disaster comes to a city, has not the Lord caused it?


The lion has roared – who will not fear? The Sovereign Lord has spoken – who can but prophesy?


‘Make two trumpets of hammered silver, and use them for calling the community together and for the camps to set out.


When both are sounded, the whole community is to assemble before you at the entrance to the tent of meeting.


So Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely, but a few survivors managed to reach their fortified cities.
