Jeremiah 38:9 - New International Version (Anglicised)

9 ‘My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern, where he will starve to death when there is no longer any bread in the city.’

because I so feared the crowd and so dreaded the contempt of the clans that I kept silent and would not go outside –


I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters, and they will eat one another’s flesh because their enemies will press the siege so hard against them to destroy them.”


King Zedekiah then gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given a loaf of bread from the street of the bakers each day until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.


Then the king commanded Ebed-Melek the Cushite, ‘Take thirty men from here with you and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.’


Ebed-Melek went out of the palace and said to him,


But I will rescue you on that day, declares the Lord; you will not be given into the hands of those you fear.


By the ninth day of the fourth month the famine in the city had become so severe that there was no food for the people to eat.


All her people groan as they search for bread; they barter their treasures for food to keep themselves alive. ‘Look, Lord, and consider, for I am despised.’


They tried to end my life in a pit and threw stones at me;
