3 The next day, when Pashhur released him from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, ‘The Lord’s name for you is not Pashhur, but Terror on Every Side.

God also said to Abraham, ‘As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah.


No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.


Then the man said, ‘Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.’


For I hear many whispering, ‘Terror on every side!’ They conspire against me and plot to take my life.


Then I made love to the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. And the Lord said to me, ‘Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.


and go out to the Valley of Ben Hinnom, near the entrance of the Potsherd Gate. There proclaim the words I tell you,


So beware, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when people will no longer call this place Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter.


I hear many whispering, ‘Terror on every side! Denounce him! Let’s denounce him!’ All my friends are waiting for me to slip, saying, ‘Perhaps he will be deceived; then we will prevail over him and take our revenge on him.’


Zephaniah the priest, however, read the letter to Jeremiah the prophet.


What do I see? They are terrified, they are retreating, their warriors are defeated. They flee in haste without looking back, and there is terror on every side,’ declares the Lord.


Do not go out to the fields or walk on the roads, for the enemy has a sword, and there is terror on every side.


So beware, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when people will no longer call it Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter, for they will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room.


‘As you summon to a feast day, so you summoned against me terrors on every side. In the day of the Lord’s anger no-one escaped or survived; those I cared for and reared my enemy has destroyed.’


My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and utter lying divinations. They will not belong to the council of my people or be listed in the records of Israel, nor will they enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.


He then brought them out and asked, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’
