Then Elijah said to them, ‘I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.


Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no-one answered, no-one paid attention.


Then Elijah commanded them, ‘Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!’ They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.


But no-one says, “Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night,


And these also stagger from wine and reel from beer: priests and prophets stagger from beer and are befuddled with wine; they reel from beer, they stagger when seeing visions, they stumble when rendering decisions.


The Lord has brought over you a deep sleep: he has sealed your eyes (the prophets); he has covered your heads (the seers).


everyone will be put to shame because of a people useless to them, who bring neither help nor advantage, but only shame and disgrace.’


The shepherds are senseless and do not enquire of the Lord; so they do not prosper and all their flock is scattered.


Many shepherds will ruin my vineyard and trample down my field; they will turn my pleasant field into a desolate wasteland.


Lord, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in time of distress, to you the nations will come from the ends of the earth and say, ‘Our ancestors possessed nothing but false gods, worthless idols that did them no good.


They said, ‘Come, let’s make plans against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the law by the priest will not cease, nor will counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophets. So come, let’s attack him with our tongues and pay no attention to anything he says.’


has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols.


They did not ask, “Where is the Lord, who brought us up out of Egypt and led us through the barren wilderness, through a land of deserts and ravines, a land of drought and utter darkness, a land where no-one travels and no-one lives?”


‘My people are fools; they do not know me. They are senseless children; they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil; they know not how to do good.’


the prophets prophesy lies, the priests rule by their own authority, and my people love it this way. But what will you do in the end?


But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless.


Instead, they have followed the stubbornness of their hearts; they have followed the Baals, as their ancestors taught them.’


Her priests do violence to my law and profane my holy things; they do not distinguish between the holy and the common; they teach that there is no difference between the unclean and the clean; and they shut their eyes to the keeping of my Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them.


‘Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them: “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: woe to you shepherds of Israel who only take care of yourselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock?


my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. ‘Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.


‘Of what value is an idol carved by a craftsman? Or an image that teaches lies? For the one who makes it trusts in his own creation; he makes idols that cannot speak.


What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?


‘Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.’


They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.


Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.


Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.


He teaches your precepts to Jacob and your law to Israel. He offers incense before you and whole burnt offerings on your altar.


Do not turn away after useless idols. They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless.


Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard for the Lord.
