As the Lord had declared, Nebuchadnezzar removed the treasures from the temple of the Lord and from the royal palace, and cut up the gold articles that Solomon king of Israel had made for the temple of the Lord.


They angered him with their high places; they aroused his jealousy with their idols.


By this, then, will Jacob’s guilt be atoned for, and this will be the full fruit of the removal of his sin: when he makes all the altar stones to be like limestone crushed to pieces, no Asherah poles or incense altars will be left standing.


Over all the barren heights in the desert destroyers will swarm, for the sword of the Lord will devour from one end of the land to the other; no-one will be safe.


‘Your wealth and your treasures I will give as plunder, without charge, because of all your sins throughout your country.


I will deliver all the wealth of this city into the hands of their enemies – all its products, all its valuables and all the treasures of the kings of Judah. They will take it away as plunder and carry it off to Babylon.


I am against you, Jerusalem, you who live above this valley on the rocky plateau, declares the Lord – you who say, ‘Who can come against us? Who can enter our refuge?’


‘Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah. He told all the people of Judah, “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘ “Zion will be ploughed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, the temple hill a mound overgrown with thickets.”


The enemy laid hands on all her treasures; she saw pagan nations enter her sanctuary – those you had forbidden to enter your assembly.


Then I will deliver you into the hands of your lovers, and they will tear down your mounds and destroy your lofty shrines. They will strip you of your clothes and take your fine jewellery and leave you stark naked.


‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: bring a mob against them and give them over to terror and plunder.


and say: “You mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign Lord. This is what the Sovereign Lord says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys: I am about to bring a sword against you, and I will destroy your high places.


I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars and pile your dead bodies on the lifeless forms of your idols, and I will abhor you.


Therefore because of you, Zion will be ploughed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, the temple hill a mound overgrown with thickets.


Their wealth will be plundered, their houses demolished. Though they build houses, they will not live in them; though they plant vineyards, they will not drink the wine.’
