Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, ‘As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.’


Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.


a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,


‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.’


My eyes will watch over them for their good, and I will bring them back to this land. I will build them up and not tear them down; I will plant them and not uproot them.


I will bring on that land all the things I have spoken against it, all that are written in this book and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations.


Just as I watched over them to uproot and tear down, and to overthrow, destroy and bring disaster, so I will watch over them to build and to plant,’ declares the Lord.


The whole valley where dead bodies and ashes are thrown, and all the terraces out to the Kidron Valley on the east as far as the corner of the Horse Gate, will be holy to the Lord. The city will never again be uprooted or demolished.’


‘Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah and all the other nations from the time I began speaking to you in the reign of Josiah till now.


For I am watching over them for harm, not for good; the Jews in Egypt will perish by sword and famine until they are all destroyed.


But the Lord has told me to say to you, “This is what the Lord says: I will overthrow what I have built and uproot what I have planted, throughout the earth.


‘Son of man, mark out two roads for the sword of the king of Babylon to take, both starting from the same country. Make a signpost where the road branches off to the city.


The Lord said to me: ‘Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then confront them with their detestable practices,


‘Son of man, wail for the hordes of Egypt and consign to the earth below both her and the daughters of mighty nations, along with those who go down to the pit.


Then the nations around you that remain will know that I the Lord have rebuilt what was destroyed and have replanted what was desolate. I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.”


The vision I saw was like the vision I had seen when he came to destroy the city and like the visions I had seen by the River Kebar, and I fell face down.


Therefore I cut you in pieces with my prophets, I killed you with the words of my mouth – then my judgments go forth like the sun.


Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets.


‘In that day ‘I will restore David’s fallen shelter – I will repair its broken walls and restore its ruins – and will rebuild it as it used to be,


But did not my words and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, overtake your ancestors? ‘Then they repented and said, “The Lord Almighty has done to us what our ways and practices deserve, just as he determined to do.” ’
