By your hand save me from such people, Lord, from those of this world whose reward is in this life. May what you have stored up for the wicked fill their bellies; may their children gorge themselves on it, and may there be leftovers for their little ones.


Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.


Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.


Wail, for the day of the Lord is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty.


In the streets they wear sackcloth; on the roofs and in the public squares they all wail, prostrate with weeping.


So put on sackcloth, lament and wail, for the fierce anger of the Lord has not turned away from us.


This is what the Lord says: ‘Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches,


and say: ‘ “What a lioness was your mother among the lions! She lay down among them and reared her cubs.


‘Son of man, prophesy and say: “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘ “Wail and say, ‘Alas for that day!’


Despair, you farmers, wail, you vine growers; grieve for the wheat and the barley, because the harvest of the field is destroyed.


Put on sackcloth, you priests, and mourn; wail, you who minister before the altar. Come, spend the night in sackcloth, you who minister before my God; for the grain offerings and drink offerings are withheld from the house of your God.


Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you drinkers of wine; wail because of the new wine, for it has been snatched from your lips.


Your rich people are violent; your inhabitants are liars and their tongues speak deceitfully.


Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the Lord’s wrath.’ In the fire of his jealousy the whole earth will be consumed, for he will make a sudden end of all who live on the earth.


Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; filled with food, they became heavy and sleek. They abandoned the God who made them and rejected the Rock their Saviour.


For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.


But you have dishonoured the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?


Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’


Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.
