They said to God, “Leave us alone! What can the Almighty do to us?”


He boasts about the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord.


They close up their callous hearts, and their mouths speak with arrogance.


I said, ‘I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth while in the presence of the wicked.’


The enemy boasted, “I will pursue, I will overtake them. I will divide the spoils; I will gorge myself on them. I will draw my sword and my hand will destroy them.”


Pharaoh said, ‘Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.’


The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.


The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly.


The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.


Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down.

Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.


For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error.


These people are grumblers and fault-finders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.
