We have endured no end of ridicule from the arrogant, of contempt from the proud.


Listen and hear my voice; pay attention and hear what I say.


The Lord says, ‘The women of Zion are haughty, walking along with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, strutting along with swaying hips, with ornaments jingling on their ankles.


The sound of wailing is heard from Zion: “How ruined we are! How great is our shame! We must leave our land because our houses are in ruins.” ’


Now, you women, hear the word of the Lord; open your ears to the words of his mouth. Teach your daughters how to wail; teach one another a lament.


Those who once ate delicacies are destitute in the streets. Those brought up in royal purple now lie on ash heaps.


This is the city of revelry that lived in safety. She said to herself, ‘I am the one! And there is none besides me.’ What a ruin she has become, a lair for wild beasts! All who pass by her scoff and shake their fists.


Whoever has ears, let them hear.’
