1 Hear the word of the Lord, you Israelites, because the Lord has a charge to bring against you who live in the land: ‘There is no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgment of God in the land.

Micaiah continued, ‘Therefore hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne with all the multitudes of heaven standing round him on his right and on his left.


You shall have no foreign god among you; you shall not worship any god other than me.


Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the instruction of our God, you people of Gomorrah!


‘Come now, let us settle the matter,’ says the Lord. ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.


Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem.


Come near, you nations, and listen; pay attention, you peoples! Let the earth hear, and all that is in it, the world, and all that comes out of it!


For the Lord has a day of vengeance, a year of retribution, to uphold Zion’s cause.


‘Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard.


No-one calls for justice; no-one pleads a case with integrity. They rely on empty arguments, they utter lies; they conceive trouble and give birth to evil.


The way of peace they do not know; there is no justice in their paths. They have turned them into crooked roads; no-one who walks along them will know peace.


Hear the word of the Lord, you who tremble at his word; ‘Your own people who hate you, and exclude you because of my name, have said, “Let the Lord be glorified, that we may see your joy!” Yet they will be put to shame.


From the time I brought your ancestors up from Egypt until today, I warned them again and again, saying, ‘Obey me.’

‘My people are fools; they do not know me. They are senseless children; they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil; they know not how to do good.’


Therefore the earth will mourn and the heavens above grow dark, because I have spoken and will not relent, I have decided and will not turn back.’


I thought, ‘These are only the poor; they are foolish, for they do not know the way of the Lord, the requirements of their God.


For Israel and Judah have not been forsaken by their God, the Lord Almighty, though their land is full of guilt before the Holy One of Israel.


‘From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike, all practise deceit.


Therefore say to them, “This is the nation that has not obeyed the Lord its God or responded to correction. Truth has perished; it has vanished from their lips.


Now, you women, hear the word of the Lord; open your ears to the words of his mouth. Teach your daughters how to wail; teach one another a lament.


‘They make ready their tongue like a bow, to shoot lies; it is not by truth that they triumph in the land. They go from one sin to another; they do not acknowledge me,’ declares the Lord.


Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘See, I will refine and test them, for what else can I do because of the sin of my people?


‘ “Therefore, you prostitute, hear the word of the Lord!


The Lord has a charge to bring against Judah; he will punish Jacob according to his ways and repay him according to his deeds.


In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel; as a man he struggled with God.


‘Hear this, you priests! Pay attention, you Israelites! Listen, royal house! This judgment is against you: you have been a snare at Mizpah, a net spread out on Tabor.


‘Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God. A spirit of prostitution is in their heart; they do not acknowledge the Lord.


Hear this, you elders; listen, all who live in the land. Has anything like this ever happened in your days or in the days of your ancestors?


Hear this word, people of Israel, the word the Lord has spoken against you – against the whole family I brought up out of Egypt:


Now then, hear the word of the Lord. You say, ‘ “Do not prophesy against Israel, and stop preaching against the descendants of Isaac.”


‘Hear, you mountains, the Lord’s accusation; listen, you everlasting foundations of the earth. For the Lord has a case against his people; he is lodging a charge against Israel.


Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.


Furthermore, just as they did not think it worth while to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.


Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God – I say this to your shame.


Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.
