9 ‘You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?’ declares the Lord Almighty. ‘Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house.

During the reign of David, there was a famine for three successive years; so David sought the face of the Lord. The Lord said, ‘It is on account of Saul and his blood-stained house; it is because he put the Gibeonites to death.’


The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at the rebuke of the Lord, at the blast of breath from his nostrils.


Listen! When he hears a certain report, I will make him want to return to his own country, and there I will have him cut down with the sword.” ’


I say to God: do not declare me guilty, but tell me what charges you have against me.


One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.


Death and Destruction are never satisfied, and neither are human eyes.


All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing.


The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass.


A ten-acre vineyard will produce only a bath of wine; a homer of seed will yield only an ephah of grain.’


They will sow wheat but reap thorns; they will wear themselves out but gain nothing. They will bear the shame of their harvest because of the Lord’s fierce anger.’


I will pour out my wrath on you and breathe out my fiery anger against you; I will deliver you into the hands of brutal men, men skilled in destruction.


But in the fifth year you may eat its fruit. In this way your harvest will be increased. I am the Lord your God.


‘Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your panelled houses, while this house remains a ruin?’


You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.’


If you do not listen, and if you do not resolve to honour my name,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honour me.


You will sow much seed in the field but you will harvest little, because locusts will devour it.


Yet I hold this against you: you have forsaken the love you had at first.


Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.
