He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.


But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterwards they will come out with great possessions.


In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.’


Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you. For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.


I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’


Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.


I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.’


When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called for his son Joseph and said to him, ‘If I have found favour in your eyes, put your hand under my thigh and promise that you will show me kindness and faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt,


Then Joseph said to his brothers, ‘I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.’


Pharaoh said, ‘Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.’


The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Saviour!


‘Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace.


‘Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed.


then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the nations where he scattered you.


The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.’


For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near.


Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest for ever.


In the one case, the tenth is collected by people who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living.


No-one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.


Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.’


‘Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed.


And the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so that they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses.


because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.
