This food should be held in reserve for the country, to be used during the seven years of famine that will come upon Egypt, so that the country may not be ruined by the famine.’


Ahab had said to Obadiah, ‘Go through the land to all the springs and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.’


Who is wise enough to understand this? Who has been instructed by the Lord and can explain it? Why has the land been ruined and laid waste like a desert that no-one can cross?


Those killed by the sword are better off than those who die of famine; racked with hunger, they waste away for lack of food from the field.


‘Then a famine struck all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great suffering, and our ancestors could not find food.
