The seven lean, ugly cows that came up afterwards are seven years, and so are the seven worthless ears of corn scorched by the east wind: they are seven years of famine.


but seven years of famine will follow them. Then all the abundance in Egypt will be forgotten, and the famine will ravage the land.


The seven years of abundance in Egypt came to an end,


He continued, ‘I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us, so that we may live and not die.’


Now the famine was still severe in the land.


I will provide for you there, because five years of famine are still to come. Otherwise you and your household and all who belong to you will become destitute.”


There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine.


Now Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had restored to life, ‘Go away with your family and stay for a while wherever you can, because the Lord has decreed a famine in the land that will last seven years.’


He called down famine on the land and destroyed all their supplies of food;


‘Then a famine struck all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great suffering, and our ancestors could not find food.
