each of the two men – the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were being held in prison – had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own.


So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody with him in his master’s house, ‘Why do you look so sad today?’


‘We both had dreams,’ they answered, ‘but there is no-one to interpret them.’ Then Joseph said to them, ‘Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.’


In the morning his mind was troubled, so he sent for all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no-one could interpret them for him.


I had a dream that made me afraid. As I was lying in bed, the images and visions that passed through my mind terrified me.


His face turned pale and he was so frightened that his legs became weak and his knees were knocking.


‘This is the end of the matter. I, Daniel, was deeply troubled by my thoughts, and my face turned pale, but I kept the matter to myself.’


I, Daniel, was worn out. I lay exhausted for several days. Then I got up and went about the king’s business. I was appalled by the vision; it was beyond understanding.
