The Lord said to her, ‘Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the elder will serve the younger.’


But Jacob said, ‘Swear to me first.’ So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.


So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared some tasty food, just the way his father liked it.


Now then, my son, do what I say: flee at once to my brother Laban in Harran.


Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you:


I myself will guarantee his safety; you can hold me personally responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him here before you, I will bear the blame before you all my life.


But the woman from Tekoa said to him, ‘Let my lord the king pardon me and my family, and let the king and his throne be without guilt.’


He too followed the ways of the house of Ahab, for his mother encouraged him to act wickedly.


All the people answered, ‘His blood is on us and on our children!’


She fell at his feet and said: ‘Pardon your servant, my lord, and let me speak to you; hear what your servant has to say.
