3 Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you. For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.

The Lord appeared to Abram and said, ‘To your offspring I will give this land.’ So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.


All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring for ever.


Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.’


On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, ‘To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates –


Then God said, ‘Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.


The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.’


Now Abraham moved on from there into the region of the Negev and lived between Kadesh and Shur. For a while he stayed in Gerar,


After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac, who then lived near Beer Lahai Roi.


Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the Lord blessed him.


He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him.


That night the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.’


There above it stood the Lord, and he said: ‘I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.


I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’


Then the Lord said to Jacob, ‘Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.’


The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you.’


The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.


the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favour in the eyes of the prison warder.


Then Israel said to Joseph, ‘I am about to die, but God will be with you and take you back to the land of your fathers.


Then Joseph said to his brothers, ‘I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.’

‘Hear my prayer, Lord, listen to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. I dwell with you as a foreigner, a stranger, as all my ancestors were.


God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob.


And God said, ‘I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.’


I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, where they resided as foreigners.


I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.


And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.” ’


When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.


Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west.


You will be faithful to Jacob, and show love to Abraham, as you pledged on oath to our ancestors in days long ago.


God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfil?


See, I have given you this land. Go in and take possession of the land that the Lord swore he would give to your fathers – to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob – and to their descendants after them.’


Then the Lord said to him, ‘This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, “I will give it to your descendants.” I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it.’


Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me – put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.


By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.


Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath.
