24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.’

I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.


After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: ‘Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.’


I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.


The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.’


God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, ‘What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.


I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,


Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.


Then he prayed, ‘Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.


There above it stood the Lord, and he said: ‘I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.


I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’


May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples.


But Laban said to him, ‘If I have found favour in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by divination that the Lord has blessed me because of you.’


He said to them, ‘I see that your father’s attitude towards me is not what it was before, but the God of my father has been with me.


The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.


When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did,


So Israel set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.


Elijah said to her, ‘Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son.


Moses answered the people, ‘Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again.


Then he said, ‘I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.’ At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.


Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defence; he has become my salvation.’


So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.


This is what the Lord says – he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you: do not be afraid, Jacob, my servant, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.


‘I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you that you fear mere mortals, human beings who are but grass,


‘Hear me, you who know what is right, you people who have taken my instruction to heart: do not fear the reproach of mere mortals or be terrified by their insults.


You came near when I called you, and you said, ‘Do not fear.’


I will remember my covenant with Jacob and my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.


But for their sake I will remember the covenant with their ancestors whom I brought out of Egypt in the sight of the nations to be their God. I am the Lord.” ’


“I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.’


‘Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.


“I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.


and none of the condemned things are to be found in your hands. Then the Lord will turn from his fierce anger, will show you mercy, and will have compassion on you. He will increase your numbers, as he promised on oath to your ancestors –


Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.’


Instead, they were longing for a better country – a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.


So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?’


When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.


And now, my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All the people of my town know that you are a woman of noble character.
