The Lord appeared to Abram and said, ‘To your offspring I will give this land.’ So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.


So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.


A man who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew. Now Abram was living near the great trees of Mamre the Amorite, a brother of Eshkol and Aner, all of whom were allied with Abram.


After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: ‘Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.’


When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.


The men turned away and went towards Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.


Now Abraham moved on from there into the region of the Negev and lived between Kadesh and Shur. For a while he stayed in Gerar,


The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, ‘Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live.


Jacob came home to his father Isaac in Mamre, near Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.


Jacob said to Joseph, ‘God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me


That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, ‘Ask for whatever you want me to give you.’


Moses answered, ‘What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, “The Lord did not appear to you”?’


To this he replied: ‘Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Harran.


By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.


Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.


Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, ‘Are you for us or for our enemies?’
