He took him outside and said, ‘Look up at the sky and count the stars – if indeed you can count them.’ Then he said to him, ‘So shall your offspring be.’


The angel added, ‘I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.’


I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.’


Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.’


And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation.


I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.


Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.


I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring.’


I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,


I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed,


Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.


May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples.


But you have said, “I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.” ’


He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift for his brother Esau:


And God said to him, ‘I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants.


‘I am God, the God of your father,’ he said. ‘Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there.


Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number.


The people of Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand on the seashore; they ate, they drank and they were happy.


But the Lord was gracious to them and had compassion and showed concern for them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To this day he has been unwilling to destroy them or banish them from his presence.


Joab reported the number of the fighting men to David: in all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handle a sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah.


David did not take the number of the men twenty years old or less, because the Lord had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars in the sky.


Now, Lord God, let your promise to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth.


You will know that your children will be many, and your descendants like the grass of the earth.


but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them.


Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self: “I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land I promised them, and it will be their inheritance for ever.” ’


I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless as the stars in the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.” ’


Who can count the dust of Jacob or number even a fourth of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and may my final end be like theirs!’


The Lord your God has increased your numbers so that today you are as numerous as the stars in the sky.


And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.


After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no-one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.


Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples invaded the country.


They came up with their livestock and their tents like swarms of locusts. It was impossible to count them or their camels; they invaded the land to ravage it.
