For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.’


I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.


Even when I am old and grey, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.


that you may tell your children and grandchildren how I dealt harshly with the Egyptians and how I performed my signs among them, and that you may know that I am the Lord.’


‘Be careful to do everything I have said to you. Do not invoke the names of other gods; do not let them be heard on your lips.


Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.


My son, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways,


My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion;


My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you.


The living, the living – they praise you, as I am doing today; parents tell their children about your faithfulness.


You have seen many things, but you pay no attention; your ears are open, but you do not listen.’


This is what the Lord says: be careful not to carry a load on the Sabbath day or bring it through the gates of Jerusalem.


Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.’


Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.


Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.


These are the decrees and laws you must be careful to follow in the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has given you to possess – as long as you live in the land.


Do not eat it with bread made with yeast, but for seven days eat unleavened bread, the bread of affliction, because you left Egypt in haste – so that all the days of your life you may remember the time of your departure from Egypt.


It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees


The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children for ever, that we may follow all the words of this law.


‘Now write down this song and teach it to the Israelites and make them sing it, so that it may be a witness for me against them.


he said to them, ‘Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law.


Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, when he said to me, ‘Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn to revere me as long as they live in the land and may teach them to their children.’


You saw no form of any kind the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully,


Be careful not to forget the covenant of the Lord your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden.


be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.


so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.


In the future, when your son asks you, ‘What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the Lord our God has commanded you?’


Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.


Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.


then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.


We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.


how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.


You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.


Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey it, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous!’


So be very careful to love the Lord your God.


He said to the Israelites, ‘In the future when your descendants ask their parents, “What do these stones mean?”


Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.


The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord; they forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs.


and did not remember the Lord their God, who had rescued them from the hands of all their enemies on every side.
