Now the third day was Pharaoh’s birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his officials:


and in the third year of his reign he gave a banquet for all his nobles and officials. The military leaders of Persia and Media, the princes, and the nobles of the provinces were present.


The Lord, the Lord Almighty, called you on that day to weep and to wail, to tear out your hair and put on sackcloth.


The Lord Almighty has revealed this in my hearing: ‘Till your dying day this sin will not be atoned for,’ says the Lord, the Lord Almighty.


‘A sword against the Babylonians!’ declares the Lord – ‘against those who live in Babylon and against her officials and wise men!


But while they are aroused, I will set out a feast for them and make them drunk, so that they shout with laughter – then sleep for ever and not awake,’ declares the Lord.


I will make her officials and wise men drunk, her governors, officers and warriors as well; they will sleep for ever and not awake,’ declares the King, whose name is the Lord Almighty.


That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, was slain,


They will be entangled among thorns and drunk from their wine; they will be consumed like dry stubble.
