34 At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes towards heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honoured and glorified him who lives for ever. His dominion is an eternal dominion; his kingdom endures from generation to generation.

‘As for God, his way is perfect: the Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.


David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying, ‘Praise be to you, Lord, the God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting.


Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.


and said: ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.’


The Lord is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.


So I said: ‘Do not take me away, my God, in the midst of my days; your years go on through all generations.


Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind,

I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from?


I lift up my eyes to you, to you who sit enthroned in heaven.


Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does.

Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come?


The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, lifted his right hand and his left hand towards heaven, and I heard him swear by him who lives for ever, saying, ‘It will be for a time, times and half a time. When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.’


‘In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure for ever.


It is my pleasure to tell you about the miraculous signs and wonders that the Most High God has performed for me.


The command to leave the stump of the tree with its roots means that your kingdom will be restored to you when you acknowledge that Heaven rules.


How great are his signs, how mighty his wonders! His kingdom is an eternal kingdom; his dominion endures from generation to generation.


You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.’


At the same time that my sanity was restored, my honour and splendour were returned to me for the glory of my kingdom. My advisors and nobles sought me out, and I was restored to my throne and became even greater than before.


‘Your Majesty, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendour.


He was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal; he lived with the wild donkeys and ate grass like the ox; and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes.


‘I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel. ‘For he is the living God and he endures for ever; his kingdom will not be destroyed, his dominion will never end.


He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshipped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.


Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of all the kingdoms under heaven will be handed over to the holy people of the Most High. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will worship and obey him.”


The Lord did not hesitate to bring the disaster on us, for the Lord our God is righteous in everything he does; yet we have not obeyed him.


Then they cried out to the Lord, ‘Please, Lord, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, Lord, have done as you pleased.’


I will make the lame my remnant, those driven away a strong nation. The Lord will rule over them in Mount Zion from that day and for ever.

‘But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”


For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.


He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.


Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
