As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.


So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh.


In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds,


Amid disquieting dreams in the night, when deep sleep falls on people,


I slept but my heart was awake. Listen! My beloved is knocking: ‘Open to me, my sister, my darling, my dove, my flawless one. My head is drenched with dew, my hair with the dampness of the night.’


Then one who looked like a man touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and began to speak. I said to the one standing before me, ‘I am overcome with anguish because of the vision, my lord, and I feel very weak.


While he was speaking to me, I was in a deep sleep, with my face to the ground. Then he touched me and raised me to my feet.


I heard and my heart pounded, my lips quivered at the sound; decay crept into my bones, and my legs trembled. Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity to come on the nation invading us.


When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.


Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.


When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.
