‘At this my heart pounds and leaps from its place.


Let the king be enthralled by your beauty; honour him, for he is your lord.


I belong to my beloved, and his desire is for me.


even if these three men – Noah, Daniel and Job – were in it, they could save only themselves by their righteousness, declares the Sovereign Lord.


He said to me, ‘Son of man, stand up on your feet and I will speak to you.’


‘Do not be afraid, you who are highly esteemed,’ he said. ‘Peace! Be strong now; be strong.’ When he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, ‘Speak, my lord, since you have given me strength.’


I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.


Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid. [The earliest manuscripts and some other ancient witnesses do not have verses 9–20.]


One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.


Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, ‘Lord, who is going to betray you?’)


“Now get up and stand on your feet. I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen and will see of me.


‘Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.’
