Acts 7:8 - New International Version (Anglicised)

8 Then he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision. And Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him eight days after his birth. Later Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.

Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and had great difficulty.


As she breathed her last – for she was dying – she named her son Ben-Oni. But his father named him Benjamin.


Abraham was the father of Isaac. The sons of Isaac: Esau and Israel.


Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,


Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath.


‘Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.


Under what circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was circumcised, or before? It was not after, but before!


Brothers and sisters, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no-one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case.


What I mean is this: the law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise.


Just think how great he was: even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder!
