But they would not listen and were as stiff-necked as their ancestors, who did not trust in the Lord their God.


Do not be stiff-necked, as your ancestors were; submit to the Lord. Come to his sanctuary, which he has consecrated for ever. Serve the Lord your God, so that his fierce anger will turn away from you.


‘But they, our ancestors, became arrogant and stiff-necked, and they did not obey your commands.


For many years you were patient with them. By your Spirit you warned them through your prophets. Yet they paid no attention, so you gave them into the hands of the neighbouring peoples.


Do not lift your horns against heaven; do not speak so defiantly.” ’


They would not be like their ancestors – a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him.


‘I have seen these people,’ the Lord said to Moses, ‘and they are a stiff-necked people.


Go up to the land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people and I might destroy you on the way.’


For the Lord had said to Moses, ‘Tell the Israelites, “You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go with you even for a moment, I might destroy you. Now take off your ornaments and I will decide what to do with you.” ’


‘Lord,’ he said, ‘if I have found favour in your eyes, then let the Lord go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people, forgive our wickedness and our sin, and take us as your inheritance.’


For I knew how stubborn you were; your neck muscles were iron, your forehead was bronze.


Yet they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he turned and became their enemy and he himself fought against them.


Yet they did not listen or pay attention; they were stiff-necked and would not listen or respond to discipline.


Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, circumcise your hearts, you people of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, or my wrath will flare up and burn like fire because of the evil you have done – burn with no-one to quench it.


To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to me? Their ears are closed so that they cannot hear. The word of the Lord is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it.


The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn. Say to them, “This is what the Sovereign Lord says.”


In addition to all your other detestable practices, you brought foreigners uncircumcised in heart and flesh into my sanctuary, desecrating my temple while you offered me food, fat and blood, and you broke my covenant.


This is what the Sovereign Lord says: no foreigner uncircumcised in heart and flesh is to enter my sanctuary, not even the foreigners who live among the Israelites.


which made me hostile towards them so that I sent them into the land of their enemies – then when their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and they pay for their sin,


for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin, both of you disobeyed my command to honour me as holy before their eyes.’ (These were the waters of Meribah Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)


But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.


‘But the man who was ill-treating the other pushed Moses aside and said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us?


‘This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words, “Who made you ruler and judge?” He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush.


‘But our ancestors refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.


‘Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him


Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised.


And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.


Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and do not be stiff-necked any longer.


The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live.


For I know how rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you have been rebellious against the Lord while I am still alive and with you, how much more will you rebel after I die!


And the Lord said to me, ‘I have seen this people, and they are a stiff-necked people indeed!


Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.


For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh –


In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ,
