Who can bring what is pure from the impure? No-one!


‘What are mortals, that they could be pure, or those born of woman, that they could be righteous?


How then can a mortal be righteous before God? How can one born of woman be pure?


The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying,


‘I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.’


You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.


‘Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it. In days of old I planned it; now I have brought it to pass, that you have turned fortified cities into piles of stone.


This is what the Lord says – the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel – to him who was despised and abhorred by the nation, to the servant of rulers: ‘Kings will see you and stand up, princes will see and bow down, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.’


He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.


The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,


At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,


Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,


On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much


‘What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, “Son, go and work today in the vineyard.”


‘Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.


So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.


‘We are going up to Jerusalem,’ he said, ‘and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles,


In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. ‘He saved others,’ they said, ‘but he can’t save himself!


The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.


The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.


Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.


‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,


And he said, ‘The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.’


He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.


what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, “I am God’s Son”?


Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.


So Pilate came out to them and asked, ‘What charges are you bringing against this man?’


Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.


how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.


because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you will not let your holy one see decay.


Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.’


Such a high priest truly meets our need – one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.
