As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. ‘Follow me,’ he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.


He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.’


He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.


As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. ‘Follow me,’ Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.


He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.


After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them.


He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.’


Then Thomas (also known as Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, ‘Let us also go, that we may die with him.’


Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, ‘But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?’


‘You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?’ she asked Peter. He replied, ‘I am not.’


Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.


Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. ‘Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,’ he said, and then he left for another place.


When they finished, James spoke up. ‘Brothers,’ he said, ‘listen to me.


Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: ‘Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.


Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.


There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting.


When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realised that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.


But Peter and John replied, ‘Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges!


Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles,


I saw none of the other apostles – only James, the Lord’s brother.


James, Cephas and John, those esteemed as pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognised the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised.


James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings.


The elder, To the lady chosen by God and to her children, whom I love in the truth – and not I only, but also all who know the truth –


Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, To those who have been called, who are loved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ:
