Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.’


I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth.


Earlier when David was fighting with Edom, Joab the commander of the army, who had gone up to bury the dead, had struck down all the men in Edom.


He was the one who defeated ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt and captured Sela in battle, calling it Joktheel, the name it has to this day.


Abishai son of Zeruiah struck down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.


Amaziah then marshalled his strength and led his army to the Valley of Salt, where he killed ten thousand men of Seir.


You have rejected us, God, and burst upon us; you have been angry – now restore us!
