After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: ‘Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.’


‘As for God, his way is perfect: the Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.


‘The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be my God, the Rock, my Saviour!


who sets me free from my enemies. You exalted me above my foes; from a violent man you rescued me.


‘He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants for ever.’


The God of Israel spoke, the Rock of Israel said to me: “When one rules over people in righteousness, when he rules in the fear of God,


You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor, but the Lord is their refuge.


Rescue me, Lord, from evildoers; protect me from the violent,


May slanderers not be established in the land; may disaster hunt down the violent.


Keep me safe, Lord, from the hands of the wicked; protect me from the violent, who devise ways to trip my feet.


Look and see, there is no-one at my right hand; no-one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no-one cares for my life.


He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.

Declare what is to be, present it – let them take counsel together. Who foretold this long ago, who declared it from the distant past? Was it not I, the Lord? And there is no God apart from me, a righteous God and a Saviour; there is none but me.


Lord, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in time of distress, to you the nations will come from the ends of the earth and say, ‘Our ancestors possessed nothing but false gods, worthless idols that did them no good.


For this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Before your eyes and in your days I will bring an end to the sounds of joy and gladness and to the voices of bride and bridegroom in this place.

He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David


salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us –


He will say: ‘Now where are their gods, the rock they took refuge in,


He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.


Blessed are you, Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord? He is your shield and helper and your glorious sword. Your enemies will cower before you, and you will tread on their heights.’


But when the kindness and love of God our Saviour appeared,


whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Saviour,


And again, ‘I will put my trust in him.’ And again he says, ‘Here am I, and the children God has given me.’


Then Hannah prayed and said: ‘My heart rejoices in the Lord; in the Lord my horn is lifted high. My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance.


‘There is no-one holy like the Lord; there is no-one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.
