Absalom behaved in this way towards all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts of the people of Israel.


David’s army marched out of the city to fight Israel, and the battle took place in the forest of Ephraim.


The battle spread out over the whole countryside, and the forest swallowed up more men that day than the sword.


The battle that day was very fierce, and Abner and the Israelites were defeated by David’s men.


Abner called out to Joab, ‘Must the sword devour for ever? Don’t you realise that this will end in bitterness? How long before you order your men to stop pursuing their fellow Israelites?’


But David’s men had killed 360 Benjaminites who were with Abner.
