and bring all the people back to you. The death of the man you seek will mean the return of all; all the people will be unharmed.’


But Absalom said, ‘Summon also Hushai the Arkite, so that we can hear what he has to say as well.’


The plan seemed right both to the king and to the whole assembly.


The king and his nobles were pleased with this advice, so the king did as Memukan proposed.


His wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, ‘Have a pole set up, reaching to a height of fifty cubits, and ask the king in the morning to have Mordecai impaled on it. Then go with the king to the banquet and enjoy yourself.’ This suggestion delighted Haman, and he had the pole set up.


Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practise them.


Saul replied, ‘The Lord bless you for your concern for me.
