2 Samuel 17:23 - New International Version (Anglicised)

23 When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his home town. He put his house in order and then hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb.

While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he also sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counsellor, to come from Giloh, his home town. And so the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept on increasing.


Now David had been told, ‘Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.’ So David prayed, ‘Lord, turn Ahithophel’s counsel into foolishness.’


Now in those days the advice Ahithophel gave was like that of one who enquires of God. That was how both David and Absalom regarded all of Ahithophel’s advice.


So David and all the people with him set out and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak, no-one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.


When Zimri saw that the city was taken, he went into the citadel of the royal palace and set the palace on fire around him. So he died,


In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, ‘This is what the Lord says: put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.’


Is it not ruin for the wicked, disaster for those who do wrong?


May this be the Lord’s payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil of me.


Declare them guilty, O God! Let their intrigues be their downfall. Banish them for their many sins, for they have rebelled against you.


But you, God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of decay; the bloodthirsty and deceitful will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you.

A person’s own folly leads to their ruin, yet their heart rages against the Lord.

So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.
