The king and all the people with him arrived at their destination exhausted. And there he refreshed himself.


Ahithophel said to Absalom, ‘I would choose twelve thousand men and set out tonight in pursuit of David.


Now the king of Aram had ordered his thirty-two chariot commanders, ‘Do not fight with anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel.’


Do not cover up their guilt or blot out their sins from your sight, for they have thrown insults in the face of the builders.


‘Awake, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me!’ declares the Lord Almighty. ‘Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little ones.


‘But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, “This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance.”


Then Jesus told them, ‘This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: ‘ “I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.”


You do not realise that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.’


When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and attacked all who were lagging behind; they had no fear of God.
