19 The king asked, ‘Isn’t the hand of Joab with you in all this?’ The woman answered, ‘As surely as you live, my lord the king, no-one can turn to the right or to the left from anything my lord the king says. Yes, it was your servant Joab who instructed me to do this and who put all these words into the mouth of your servant.

Uriah said to David, ‘The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in tents, and my commander Joab and my lord’s men are camped in the open country. How could I go to my house to eat and drink and make love to my wife? As surely as you live, I will not do such a thing!’


Then the king said to the woman, ‘Don’t keep from me the answer to what I am going to ask you.’ ‘Let my lord the king speak,’ the woman said.


Then go to the king and speak these words to him.’ And Joab put the words in her mouth.


And if I had put my life in jeopardy – and nothing is hidden from the king – you would have kept your distance from me.’


Now when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him in the stomach, and he died.


May his blood fall on the head of Joab and on his whole family! May Joab’s family never be without someone who has a running sore or leprosy or who leans on a crutch or who falls by the sword or who lacks food.’


Your hands were not bound, your feet were not fettered. You fell as one falls before the wicked.’ And all the people wept over him again.
