I have the power to harm you; but last night the God of your father said to me, “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”


When King David heard all this, he was furious.


Whoever conceals hatred with lying lips and spreads slander is a fool.


If you take your neighbour to court, do not betray another’s confidence,


Enemies disguise themselves with their lips, but in their hearts they harbour deceit.


Their malice may be concealed by deception, but their wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.


Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools.


‘If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over.


‘In your anger do not sin’: do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,


Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.


But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.


Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness.


This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.


Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.


Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.
