16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel, for you went up onto your father’s bed, onto my couch and defiled it.


When the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon and his relationship to the Lord, she came to test Solomon with hard questions.


All day long they twist my words; all their schemes are for my ruin.


‘Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd,


‘Do not deny justice to your poor people in their lawsuits.


But you must not mention “a message from the Lord” again, because each one’s word becomes their own message. So you distort the words of the living God, the Lord Almighty, our God.


Therefore the law is paralysed, and justice never prevails. The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted.


Jesus replied, ‘And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?


they are not to “honour their father or mother” with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.


Jesus replied, ‘You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.


Do not pervert justice or show partiality. Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the innocent.


Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.


We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand.


Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.


Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God’s elect, exiles, scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia,


and, ‘A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.’ They stumble because they disobey the message – which is also what they were destined for.


But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them – bringing swift destruction on themselves.


With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed – an accursed brood!


So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.


I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Saviour through your apostles.


For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a licence for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.
