You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed.


Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.


Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labour on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.


Those who are far away will come and help to build the temple of the Lord, and you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you. This will happen if you diligently obey the Lord your God.’


And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.”


but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.


Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.’


Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults.


Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.


And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,


Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed – not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence – continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,


Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.


For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,


in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.


And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.


See to it that no-one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.


We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realised.


When they returned to Joshua, they said, ‘Not all the army will have to go up against Ai. Send two or three thousand men to take it and do not weary the whole army, for only a few people live there.’


Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.


Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble,


and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.


So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.


But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever! Amen.
