‘As for you, go back home. When you set foot in your city, the boy will die.


So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria,


He told the king, ‘This is what the Lord says: is it because there is no God in Israel for you to consult that you have sent messengers to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Because you have done this, you will never leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!’


When the messengers returned to the king, he asked them, ‘Why have you come back?’


‘A man came to meet us,’ they replied. ‘And he said to us, “Go back to the king who sent you and tell him, ‘This is what the Lord says: is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending messengers to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!’ ” ’


In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, ‘This is what the Lord says: put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.’


Elisha answered, ‘Go and say to him, “You will certainly recover.” Nevertheless, the Lord has revealed to me that he will in fact die.’


Truly the righteous attain life, but whoever pursues evil finds death.


When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down, but even in death the righteous seek refuge in God.


For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child – both alike belong to me. The one who sins is the one who will die.


For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness, and not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
