1 And Samuel’s word came to all Israel. Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines at Aphek.

The next spring Ben-Hadad mustered the Arameans and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.


The rest of them escaped to the city of Aphek, where the wall collapsed on twenty-seven thousand of them. And Ben-Hadad fled to the city and hid in an inner room.

All of you are standing today in the presence of the Lord your God – your leaders and chief men, your elders and officials, and all the other men of Israel,

on the south; all the land of the Canaanites, from Arah of the Sidonians as far as Aphek and the border of the Amorites;


Ummah, Aphek and Rehob. There were twenty-two towns and their villages.


But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said, “No, appoint a king over us.” So now present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and clans.’


The Philistines gathered all their forces at Aphek, and Israel camped by the spring in Jezreel.


And the Lord said to Samuel: ‘See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle.


The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield.


After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.


Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us.’
