Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness that I have shown to you.’


Laban said, ‘This heap is a witness between you and me today.’ That is why it was called Galeed.


May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.’ So Jacob took an oath in the name of the Fear of his father Isaac.


People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.


‘Don’t be afraid,’ he said. ‘My father Saul will not lay a hand on you. You shall be king over Israel, and I will be second to you. Even my father Saul knows this.’


‘Please forgive your servant’s presumption. The Lord your God will certainly make a lasting dynasty for my lord, because you fight the Lord’s battles, and no wrongdoing will be found in you as long as you live.


When the Lord has fulfilled for my lord every good thing he promised concerning him and has appointed him ruler over Israel,
