‘ “By what means?” the Lord asked. ‘ “I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,” he said. ‘ “You will succeed in enticing him,” said the Lord. “Go and do it.”


Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.


Saul’s attendants said to him, ‘See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you.


Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the lyre. He will play when the evil spirit from God comes on you, and you will feel better.’


Once more war broke out, and David went out and fought the Philistines. He struck them with such force that they fled before him.


Now Saul heard that David and his men had been discovered. And Saul was seated, spear in hand, under the tamarisk tree on the hill at Gibeah, with all his officials standing at his side.
