9 But Saul and the army spared Agag and the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves and lambs – everything that was good. These they were unwilling to destroy completely, but everything that was despised and weak they totally destroyed.

When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf.


‘I will return the cities my father took from your father,’ Ben-Hadad offered. ‘You may set up your own market areas in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.’ Ahab said, ‘On the basis of a treaty I will set you free.’ So he made a treaty with him, and let him go.


‘This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.’


But keep away from the devoted things, so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it.


when I saw in the plunder a beautiful robe from Babylonia, two hundred shekels of silver and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.’


Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel:


Saul answered, ‘The soldiers brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best of the sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord your God, but we totally destroyed the rest.’


Why did you not obey the Lord? Why did you pounce on the plunder and do evil in the eyes of the Lord?’


Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.” ’


Because you did not obey the Lord or carry out his fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the Lord has done this to you today.
